ARCHITECTURE: Chiswick House

April 18th, 2010 by pacapao

Chiswick House was built as a perfect Palladian villa outside of London by its owner and architecture affictionado Lord Burlington from 1726-1729, the gardens werde designed by the famous and influential William Kent. In The Servant (1963) dir. Joseph Losey, the young “master” Tony (James Fox) visits with his fiancé (Wendy Craig) Lady and Lord Mounset (Catherine Lacey and Richard Vernon) who reside there. They have a somewhat outlandish conversation. It’s great fun!

Where the Red Fern Grows (2003) [VHS]

Where the Red Fern Grows (2003) [VHS] Waste of Film and Time – A. Donaldson – florida
Its a sad and pathetic world when a book this good has not one, but TWO crappy movies!!(no, i wont count the sequel.. it was actually better than these because it WASN’T based off of a book!)
Instead of copying word for word from the first movie they could have made it so much better by using different scenes that were more important! There were a LOT of scenes to choose from like when Billy trapped the first coon, or saving Little Anne from the frozen river, or when Old Dan is stuck in a tree and the scene where Little Anne wins the beauty contest.

Seriously…. this is a waste of time. waste of money. waste of space. I feel bad for those poor dogs and the little girls who had to be in this. i know i need to read the book again but i could have sworn there were three sisters….. not two..
Most of all the older actors, directors, and scrip writers should hang their heads in shame for being so shallow and unoriginal. they even had the nerve to do a remake of the Andy Williams song at the very very end of the credits! and thats another thing. the songs from this version were so ill timed and out of place, not to mention out of time! Wynonna indeed… were they trying to lure in the audience with that song??

All i am happy about is… my instincts were right. I’m glad i waited so long to finally see this because i was worried it would be as bad as the first.. I’m glad i didnt pay to see it(unless you count netflix) and I’m GLAD i watched it online instead of wasting a movie rental and ruining my weekend!

Trust me if you are a fan of the book this will leave a BAD taste in your mouth. Sorry, spoiler alert!!! The lion isn’t killed, Billy DOESN’T trip Prichard, and you don’t even get to see hounds sliding around on wet floors. i admit i liked the first movie for their attempt at humour. this movie didn’t even TRY! their one attempt involved Billy trespassing on his way to get the pups and getting shot at. wow…..

if it was possible i would delete this version from my memory. Now i’m off to read the book instead. thats the best i can do.

Hi, my name is Davis Grimsley. I’m in my teens and haven’t seen many movies. One of the best movies is Where the Red Fern Grows. I would give it five stars.

One of the main points in the plot is when Billy gets Little Ann and Old Dan. Some of the main characters are Billy, Old Dan, Little Ann, Mama, Papa, and Grandpa.

I think this movie is great, and it can’t be better. I think it is great because the Red Fern symbolizes the true meaning of love and care. I think it was superior how Little Ann and Old Dan stayed together NO matter what happened.

I think the theme is “God helps those who help themselves.” What that means is if you help yourself, God will do the rest. I think that is the theme because Billy prayed for the tree to fall and, it did!!
: Based on Wilson Rawls’s 1961 novel of the same name, Where the Red Fern Grows is the touching story of a 12-year-old, Ozark mountain boy (Joseph Ashton) who wants a dog so badly he performs odd jobs for months and saves enough to get two hunting hounds. Just as he hoped, the dogs usher in a period of golden adventure and happiness. Moreover, the pets prove profitable at awards shows and courageous while fending off danger from wild animals. No story about a farm boy and his best four-legged pals is complete, however, without sacrifice and ensuing wisdom; Where the Red Fern Grows has plenty of both. This 2003 feature is co-directed by the original 1974 film’s producer and screenwriter, Lyman Dayton, and while it is both efficient and emotionally effective, one might have expected this second go-round to be a bit more deeply felt. Supporting performances by Dabney Coleman and Kris Kristofferson are commendable, while Dave Matthews (yes, that Dave Matthews) has a sweet presence as the hero’s kind father. –Tom Keogh Where the Red Fern Grows (2003) [VHS]

Roger Zogolovitch: Andrea Palladio through the eyes of contemporary architects

April 11th, 2010 by pacapao

Part of the exhibition ‘Andrea Palladio: Through the eyes of contemporary architects’ at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (until 21 April 2009). Andrea Palladios enduring presence has shaped our experience of architecture and permeated its practice since the sixteenth century. This exhibition establishes a dialogue between the Renaissance master and contemporary practitioners from different generations who are shaping the future of architecture today. Through pictorial essays and film interviews each architect reveals how Palladio’s presence resonates with them. These architects offer a lens through which we can discover and rediscover Palladio, adding to our experience of the Royal Academy exhibition ‘Andrea Palladio: His Life and Legacy’. The architects here challenge accepted views and suggest new ways of understanding Palladios influence and presence in contemporary practice. The Complete PCI Express Reference: Design Implications for Hardware and Software Developers (Engineer to Engineer series)

The Complete PCI Express Reference: Design Implications for Hardware and Software Developers (Engineer to Engineer series) Good one with more details – Bala C – SFO,CA,USA
I have been using this book as reference for most of the time and i prefer this one compared to the latest release. This is targetted for designers mainly..
As an experienced hardware engineer first at HP and now with a startup, I read all the other reviews for this and other books with an interest in getting more information than what is in the specification. I decided to buy this Intel book. This book has all the inside information in more detail as noted in the other reviews. Most importantly it took the time to explain all complex issues in the specification with straight forward and clear discussions. Most importantly it broke down the complexity of the complex flow control information and how to calculate the credits in to straight forward discussiosns. It retained the more detailed design engineering facts and figures from the specification and went beyond each topic with additonal information that are very useful. In addition the features observed in the other reviews I found the details for the architecture of the Root Complex, switch, and the endpoints very useful. The specification was very weak on these details and it not should not have been. I used two previous books by this author for PCI and ISA designs and these books were also the best available and still are. I also like the on going Intel based web site that posts updates to the book due to specification changes. The way the specification changes are done and posted done by the PCISIG is impossible to follow. The updates to the book that reflect they changes to the specification are much easier to follow. I only wish they were posted more quickly. : The Complete PCI Express Reference is a comprehensive reference written and reviewed by industry experts that allows hardware and software developers to implement PCI Express design correctly and completely in minimum time. Extensive illustrations, flow charts, and cross references not found in the PCI Express specifications or any other book provide the complete details of the PCI Express architecture.

Specific topics include detailed architecture, address and routing, different packets and associated layers, traffic classes and virtual channels, flow control, software configuration architecture and registers. Also provided is information on power, interrupts, lock protocol, as well as a discussion of mechanical and electrical requirements.
